The reef keeps a calendar. So do we.

There is no bad month to visit Belize, but there are trade-offs. This is how the year usually goes, so you can choose yours with open eyes.

The year at a glance

  1. January Dry season starts to settle; cold fronts can stir the sea.
  2. February Dry, green, and the water clearing. Lobster closes mid-month.
  3. March Reliably dry; the first whale-shark moons off Placencia.
  4. April Calm seas, clear water, whale sharks. Easter is busy.
  5. May Hot, calm, clear. The last dry month in most years.
  6. June Rains begin; lobster reopens mid-month. Quieter, greener.
  7. July Showers and sun; school holidays. Hurricane season is open.
  8. August Often good weather between storms. Watch the forecasts.
  9. September The wettest weeks and peak storm risk. Cheaper, for a reason.
  10. October Still wet, still storm season. Brave, or simply flexible.
  11. November Rains easing; Settlement Day on the 19th.
  12. December Green and festive; the dry season begins. Book early.

Month by month

The table scrolls sideways on small screens. Brighter bars mean more of the thing in that row: more rain, calmer seas, higher storm risk, clearer water, better odds.

Travelling in the rains

If September or October is your only window, it can still be a good trip. We keep the caye days late and flexible, choose lodges with good cancellation terms, pair the reef with Cayo where rain matters less, and watch the forecasts with you in the week before. We will also tell you plainly if we think you should wait.

For school holidays in July and August, the odds are usually reasonable, and the reef is often calm between weather systems. Travel insurance that covers hurricanes is essential.
